MUSIC: LIVE: SUNDARA KARMA PLAY PACKED SHOW AT EDINBURGH'S LIQUID ROOMS

Sundara Karma - this years prime indie-pop band from Reading, England - are out touring the UK as the final gasp before their debut album hits the shops in January 2017. As part of their tour the band, of course, passed through The Liquid Rooms in Edinburgh.

The night hit off on a high note, with two sensational support acts, Joy Room and FREAK. The two surprisingly sound very different to Sundara Karma.

As the dimly lit stage becomes foggy, we see Hayden, Ally and Dom take the stage, readying their instruments and psyching themselves up to begin. Frontman, Oscar Lulu, goes to pick up his guitar with a featherlight touch, as though it held the spirits of everyone in the room.

Sundara Karma open with one of their older, classic singles, Indigo Puff. The intro is driven by drums, making everyone in the room start to slowly shuffle around. As soon as Young Understanding plays, every member of the audience is off their feet, flinging themselves about to the euphoric melodies - this could well be an anthem of the indie generation. Sundara Karma continue to play through a lot of their older material, connecting with their original fans and making new ones simultaneously.

Half way through the set, the band stop to play a cover of Never Too Much by Luther Vandross. It welcomes every member of the audience to join in a funk-infused dance - it's as if the place was transformed into an 80’s disco.

Sundara Karma then proceed to play through a brilliant set of old and new material that fills the audience with a rush of pure dopamine: everyone's jumping, completely forgetting the concept of “oh shit, I shouldn’t dance, I won't look cool…”

Overall, this is a band all of you need to go see. Using their catchy prime indie-rock guitar riffs, intricate bass, anthemic drums and soothing yet powerful vocals; Sundara Karma have established themselves as one of the main live forces to be reckoned with this year.

I’d go and see these artists of modern pop-rock again and again. This gig was a completely exhilarating performance.
