FILM: UNMISSABLE THIS WEEK 18/05/2016

Sing Street (Top choice)

What?

A coming of age comedy set in 1980’s Dublin, filled with great music and comedy. Following the attempts of one local boy as he tries to set up a band to impress The Girl. Should be cliché, but it’s wonderfully charming.

Who?

John Carney (Begin Again and Once) returns to his romanticised affair with music. Leading Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Aiden Gillen among other newcomers with perfect timing.

Why Should I Care?

It’s heartfelt, has an incredible soundtrack and an incredibly funny script. Simply put, it’s the spark any coming of age film wishes it could be.

When’s it out?

Sing Street is out May 20th.

Everybody Wants Some

What?

A retro jock comedy from Richard Linklater (Dazed and Confused). One which playfully attacks the representation of the jock archetype in cinema.

Who?

First off Linklater is a legend, given Dazed and Confused’s perfect reputation. He’s on top form here commanding Juston Street (Courage), Blake Jenner (Glee) and Ryan Guzman (Pretty Little Liars) with ease.

Why Should I care?

It’s a classic piece of feel good comedy from an innovator of the genre. If you want a film you can absorb with glee, then this is for you.

When’s it out?

Everybody Wants Some is out now.

Our Kind of Traitor

What?

An update of a classic Le Carre spy story, along the same lines as BBC’s The Night Manager.

Who?

Ewan McGregor (Trainspotting), Damien Lewis (Homeland) and Naomi Harris (Skyfall).

Why Should I Care?

Le Carre is a formidable figure in the spy genre. Previous adaptations such as Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy amazed audiences. And Our Kind of Traitor looks set to follow suite.

When’s it out?

Our Kind of Traitor is out now.
