This week’s releases vary from superhero blockbusters to family drama. They may be vastly different, but all are brilliant.
Captain America Civil War
What?
A superhero film of epic proportions. Captain America sees the Avengers team divided as new laws regarding mutant rights are passed. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo (Captain America: Winter Soldier).
Who?
Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr reprise their roles as Captain America and Iron Man respectively. Alongside nearly everyone who’s been in a Marvel film ever. Except for Ben Affleck’s Daredevil. Thankfully.
Why should I care?
This looks like the first essential Marvel film of 2016. It takes a familiar premise of the superhero group and tears it apart. Early reviews have praised the film for its lavish production values and frantic action sequences. It’s set to be a genuinely memorable blockbuster.
When’s it out?
Civil War is out on April 28th.

Green Room (Film of the Week)
What?
An unbearably tense thriller revolving around a punk band being hunted by neo Nazis. Directed by Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin)
Who?
Imogen Poots and Anton Yelchin lead the hunted band members. Whilst Patrick Stewart plays the murderous white supremacist antagonist.
Why should I care?
Patrick Stewart is terrifying. This may sound like a weird reason to see a film, but this reverse typecasting is brilliant. The film is genuinely unpleasant, and quite shocking at points. Both of which help create a real sense of terror. Blue Ruin was rightfully loved, but this is Saulnier’s masterpiece.
When’s it out?
Green Room has advanced screenings this Wednesday in select cinemas.

Louder than Bombs
What?
A harrowing drama surrounding the death of a famed war photographer. Focused on the turmoil as her family is brought back together years after her untimely death. Directed by Joachim Trier (Oslo, August 31st).
Who?
Jesse Eisenberg and Devin Druid star as the fractured family’s sons Jonah and Conrad Reed. While Gabriel Bryn plays their father Gene Reed, desperate to fix matters at any cost. Isabelle Huppert stars as the deceased photographer Isabelle Reed.
Why should I care?
It’s a potent insight into a broken family. Each of the Reed’s is differently affected by the tragedy and watching this unfurl on screen is tragic thing of beauty. Trier has always been skilled at capturing emotion in his movies. Louder than Bombs is no exception. It’s not an easy watch, but its a beautifully realised tale of tragedy.
